Process & Profile

Bruichladdich Octomore Edition 17.3 Single Malt Scotch Whisky is the single farm, single field, single vintage expression of the Octomore 17 Series. Made exclusively from Concerto barley grown in Irene’s Field at Octomore Farm on Islay, just two miles from Bruichladdich Distillery, Edition 17.3 places extraordinary emphasis on provenance, barley, and the influence of place.

The barley was harvested in 2019 and distilled in 2020, with the spirit matured for five years on Islay. Octomore 17.3 is aged full-term in a complex combination of first-fill bourbon barrels and second-fill European oak casks, including casks previously used for Ribera del Duero wine, Sauternes, Eiswein, and Syrah.

Malted to a formidable 132.1 PPM and bottled at 60.9% ABV (121.8 proof), 17.3 delivers the enormous peat intensity expected from Octomore while maintaining remarkable clarity and balance. Coastal smoke, sweet barley, salted caramel, orchard fruit, citrus, vanilla, toasted coconut, and maritime salinity come together in an expressive Islay single malt that directly connects the whisky to the field where its barley was grown.

Tasting Notes

  • Nose: Coastal peat smoke, sea spray, warm malt, brown sugar, lemon peel, green apple, pear, vanilla, marzipan, and fresh herbal notes.

  • Palate: Salted caramel, smoked apple, toasted coconut, praline, vanilla cream, sweet barley, citrus oils, pepper, mineral salinity, and deep earthy peat.

  • Finish: Long and dry with malt sweetness, soft florals, vanilla, maritime salt, charred oak, and persistent savory peat smoke.

What Makes It Special

  • The Islay barley expression within the Bruichladdich Octomore 17 Series.

  • Made from 100% Concerto barley grown in Irene’s Field at Octomore Farm on Islay.

  • Octomore Farm sits approximately two miles from Bruichladdich Distillery, giving the whisky an unusually direct connection to its place of origin.

  • Represents a single farm, single field, single vintage approach to Scotch whisky production.

  • Barley harvested in 2019 and distilled in 2020.

  • Aged for 5 years on Islay.

  • Malted to an intense 132.1 PPM, significantly higher than Octomore 17.1 and 17.2.

  • Matured full-term in first-fill bourbon barrels and second-fill European oak.

  • European oak components include casks previously used for Ribera del Duero, Sauternes, Eiswein, and Syrah.

  • Bottled at a powerful 60.9% ABV (121.8 proof).

  • Combines extreme peat with sweet barley, orchard fruit, vanilla, caramel, citrus, coastal salinity, and earthy smoke.

  • A highly distinctive release for collectors of Octomore, Bruichladdich, heavily peated Islay Scotch, and limited single malt whisky.

How to Enjoy

Bruichladdich Octomore Edition 17.3 is best explored neat first in a quality whisky glass. Give the whisky several minutes to rest so the initial coastal smoke can settle and reveal the sweet barley, green apple, pear, vanilla, caramel, citrus, and herbal characteristics underneath.

At 60.9% ABV, adding water gradually can be especially rewarding. A few drops can soften the alcohol intensity while opening additional malt sweetness, orchard fruit, vanilla, mineral character, and maritime salinity. Experienced peat whisky drinkers may also want to compare it directly with Octomore 17.1 and 17.2 to explore how barley provenance and cask selection change the character of the same series.
