Process & Profile
Bruichladdich Octomore Edition 17.2 Single Malt Scotch Whisky explores the influence of wine and fortified-wine casks on Octomore’s super-heavily peated Islay spirit. Made from the same batch of 100% Scottish mainland Concerto barley as Octomore 17.1 and malted to 81.0 PPM, Edition 17.2 provides a direct comparison to its bourbon-cask-focused counterpart while introducing a dramatically different maturation profile.
Distilled in 2020 from the 2019 barley harvest, the whisky is aged for five years. It spends four years in second-fill French oak casks that previously matured Californian red wine and then bourbon before holding Octomore, followed by a finish in first-fill Port barriques. Bruichladdich had not previously matured Octomore using this exact cask combination, giving 17.2 a distinctive balance of red fruit, spice, citrus, oak, maritime character, and persistent peat smoke.
Bottled at a powerful 59.5% ABV (119 proof), Octomore 17.2 retains the intensity expected from the series while the Port influence adds rich berry sweetness and depth. The result is a particularly fruit-driven Octomore expression where raspberry, blackcurrant, strawberry, raisin, citrus, sweet malt, pepper, and dry smoke come together around the whisky’s unmistakable Islay character.

How to Enjoy
Enjoy Bruichladdich Octomore Edition 17.2 neat first to experience the contrast between its intense peat smoke and rich Port-influenced fruit character. Allow the whisky several minutes to rest in the glass so the raspberry, blackcurrant, strawberry, toasted oak, spice, citrus, and sweet malt notes can develop.
At 59.5% ABV, a small amount of water can reveal additional layers of berry fruit, citrus oils, barley sweetness, and spice while softening the alcohol intensity. Adding water gradually is especially useful for exploring how the Port cask finish interacts with Octomore’s earthy, peppery peat.
