Ron Zacapa Edición Negra Solera Gran Reserva Aged Rum

Guatemalan Aged Rum | 43% ABV | 86 Proof | 750mL | Solera Blend Aged 6–24 Years | Double-Charred Oak Finish

Process & Profile

Ron Zacapa Edición Negra Solera Gran Reserva Aged Rum is a rich, smoky expression of Zacapa’s Guatemalan rum style. Crafted from the first press of sugar cane rather than traditional molasses, it is built from a blend of rums aged between six and 24 years using Zacapa’s adaptation of the Spanish Sistema Solera.

Maturation takes place approximately 2,300 meters above sea level in the Guatemalan highlands, where the cooler climate slows the interaction between spirit and oak. During its maturation journey, the rum encounters several cask types, including barrels that previously held American whiskey, charred American whiskey, Oloroso Sherry, and Pedro Ximénez wine.

Edición Negra receives additional character from specially selected American whiskey barrels that are heavily charred and smoked. These casks give the rum its darker, more intense profile, adding smoke, toasted oak, spice, and chocolate to Zacapa’s naturally rich dried-fruit sweetness.

Bottled at 86 proof, Edición Negra offers greater intensity than Zacapa’s classic expressions while maintaining the smooth texture and layered fruit character associated with the brand.

Tasting Notes

Nose: Caramelized fruit, ripe plum, raisins, toasted oak, and soft smoke

Palate: Dark chocolate, dried fruit, woody spice, caramelized sweetness, charred oak, and warming smoke

Finish: Bold, smooth, and persistent with lingering chocolate, dried fruit, spice, toasted wood, and smoke

What Makes It Special

Zacapa Edición Negra stands apart through its emphasis on heavily toasted and smoky oak. While the core Solera maturation builds layers of fruit, sweetness, and spice, the specially charred American whiskey casks introduce a darker dimension that distinguishes it from Zacapa No. 23.

The blend incorporates rums aged from six to 24 years, providing a combination of youthful vibrancy and mature oak depth. Oloroso and Pedro Ximénez casks contribute dried-fruit richness, while American whiskey barrels bring vanilla, spice, and toasted wood.

The final influence of heavily charred and smoked barrels adds notes of dark chocolate and smoke without turning Edición Negra into an aggressively smoky spirit. The result remains balanced, with caramelized fruit and raisins supporting the deeper oak character.

Each bottle also features Zacapa’s signature handwoven petate band, connecting the presentation to the brand’s Guatemalan heritage.

How to Enjoy

Enjoy Zacapa Edición Negra neat to experience its full progression of caramelized fruit, dark chocolate, spice, charred oak, and smoke. Allowing the rum to rest briefly in the glass can help the plum and raisin aromas become more expressive.

It can also be served over one large ice cube, where gradual dilution softens the charred oak and reveals additional fruit and chocolate.

Its smoky profile works especially well in spirit-forward cocktails. Try it in a Rum Old Fashioned or Manhattan-style cocktail, where the dark fruit, chocolate, and toasted oak can provide a distinctive alternative to whiskey.
